the Sneakernet of living things

Sneakernets are rogue information networks where electronic information is shared through the physical movement of hard drives, USB drives, floppy disks and other media. Mycelium are fungal networks that act as a kind of “tree internet,” sharing information along masses of threadlike strands called hyphae. How might we imagine, in the tradition of Donna Haraway, “string figures” of ethernet cables, hyphae, humans and herd animals to create alternative information networks of diverse bio intelligences? Could such a “World Wide Web” flatten the typical hierarchies across species or would it lead to further exploitation and objectification of the natural world?

Artifact 1: Inspired by the United States Frequency Allocation Chart, we created the look of this Training-Modulation Module to help new human nodes like yourself understand your role in the Sneakernet of Living Things. It’s a collage of research tidbits and an infinite scroll of connections between them. Hidden within the various colors of the visual are raw information nuggets, almost like data packets. It serves as a reading list of sorts or a psychedelic bibliography for humans to learn more about various bio intelligences, including mycelium, slime and more.

Congratulations on being one of the newest nodes to join the planet’s only mutually beneficial information network. The Sneakernet of Living Things is made up of “string figures” of entities like ethernet cables, hyphae, herd animals and now humans that entwine and entangle to create diverse connections of bio intelligences. To keep this network up and running, you need to understand its origins and the important role you play in it.

Oh! Hi Systems Administrator Maria! Oh and class is here. Well look who decided to show up -  good ol thorn in my side quartile 78.9221-78131! Better late than never. Well welcome!

Welcome! Welcome. Welllcomeeeeeee.

Now, quartile 78.9221-78131, we have been hearing bad reports!

Baaaad….. (pause) …. reports!

It does tend to happen with your kind.

Huuuman-kind.

Can’t live with ‘em can’t live without ‘em. I believe this is a saying your kind enjoys. (chuckles to self)

--HA. ha. HA. haaa. Human nodes DO tend to be the WEAKEST.

I mean it was their genius idea to join the Sneakernet of Living Things.

Simmerrrrrr!

You’re right. My wiring is getting overheated. Ok, let’s get started. (raises arms like a conductor) Noooodes - modulate!

*louder* NODES...modulate!  (blinks zoom camera off and on to demonstrate)

(says slowly in a condescending way)

Moooooooduuuuulaaaaaate.

(blinks zoom camera off and on very slowly to demonstrate)

Artifact 3: Is the Sneakernet of Living Things down...again? Must be a human node out of sync again. Begin scanning protocols!
